About Fantasy Football Draft Board

Our fantasy football league has remained intact for longer than we’d care to admit: 22 years. These 22 years have witnessed the suffering of the the lows of the Kordell Stewarts of 1997 and the highs of the 2003 Jamal Lewis’s, and every Madden Curse in between. Our league can even lay claim to having Doug Martin’s 272 yards and 4 touchdown performance in 2012 go to waste, as he was riding the bench of a team owner, who to this day has never quite gotten over it – and is steadily reminded of it.

One of the things that our league has always managed to maintain is having a live draft – every year. In our view, it is the best part of the season and no matter who’s spouse was put off or employment was being put at risk – we made time for draft night. And believe it or not - for a period of time, we did it without any draft board and player label kit - if you can imagine such a thing. We did it caveman style. Although draft night never stopped being fun, the draft board-less chaos that would ensue was insufferable.

Save The Draft

Board Size: 4' x 6'. Full Sized.

Board Material: 80 pound stock. Feels sturdy and heavy and it opens with no sticking or tearing.

Player Labels: 1” x 4”. Full Sized Label. These are our favorite labels. The color coordination is spot-on with easily distinguishable colors from a distance and they set the gold standard when it comes to giving the size of the bye week number the respect it deserves. Far and away the largest display of that number among its competitors. In an attempt to be as discerning as possible of this label set, we took the extra step and attempted to identify any missing fantasy football relevant player labels. We were able to come up with one: Rob Kelley RB WAS. While Rob Kelley managed 4 carries for 8 yards last year and is currently unemployed he was on our 2018 list of draft-able players. One.

Price: $27.50.

Summary:

Folks, we have a winner - and it’s not even close. As a whole, this kit checks every box there is: Board Size, Board Material, Label Size, label Imprinting, Magic Marker. For $27.50, which is among the least expensive on the market. We are just not sure what more you can ask of a product designed to make draft night easier. In our view, you are getting more than you pay for.

To boot – they have easily the cleanest website that we ordered from, complete with an 800 number to call. Ordering was a breeze – streamlined with the click of a single “Buy now” button had us right to the cart and out.

Perusing the reviews from verified buyers on their site – it looks like we aren’t the only ones that give this fantasy football draft kit such high praise.

Brunos Draft Kits

Board Size: 3.5 ft x 5.2 ft

Board Material: Heavy and sturdy. Maybe the most heavy weight paper material on the market. We are not sure if it had anything to do with it, or how common it is among all of their kits – but you had to really work to get the board open without tearing it. Again, we suspect that perhaps the paper is so heavy that it weights the creases such that it weakens them.

Player Labels: In a word: huge. These were the biggest labels that we reviewed. With the exception of the use of a dark grey color that blended a bit with the black color, the colors were well-coordinated and adequately distinguishable from one another. Though the bye week was sorely understated on a label this big, the sheer size of the label compensated enough where it made the bye week sufficiently readable from a distance.

*A note about the website. The ordering process entails a dizzying amount of options, each with its own step up in price. So dizzying that it made it a painstaking process. There are literally hundreds of possible combinations among 4 different sizes of boards, each with as many as 14 different sub-selections and 9 different “Extras” among them. While we suppose there is something to be said for offering a wide variety, this bordered on absurd. The reviewer who purchased this kit commented that “It was like taking the SAT”. This all said, if you want options – look no further.

Summary:

As expensive as it gets. We don’t know what your entry fee is for your league, but this goes a long way towards eating up a lot of a typical entry fee for ours and we didn’t even get into the high-end stuff that was available. That said, we would grant that the premium you are paying is being put into the kit itself (sturdy board, huge labels). You aren’t paying for licensing fees or koozies or smacktalk stickers. You’re paying for the materials that will make draft night more efficient. But for a 3.5 x 5.2 ft board with no pen? Hard to justify.

Draft Kit

Board Size: 3’1” x 4’7”

Board Material: Though clearly not the heavy-duty paper stock like some of the rest, it is also not thin and flimsy. The word that comes to mind is adequate.

Player Labels: 1” x 4”. Full Sized

We like these labels. Although the print and material come off a little “dull”, the kit does its job with consistent color coordination, name population, and well-spaced fonts that make them easily readable from a distance. Although we are not a big fan of using simple white labels, in this kit it just seems to work.
Though the bye week detail is too small for us, the design of the label has the bye week separated and well-spaced enough from the rest of the label that it does a decent job compensating for it. Though we would like to see a full-sized label like this do the bye week justice with a larger font size, it is at least easily identifiable on the label.

Summary:

Despite falling well short of a full-sized board and missing the marker pen for write-ins, we like this fantasy football draft kit overall. For a more than reasonable price, you are getting a kit that effectively serves its purpose: to make your draft night run smoothly. In this context, there is very little not to like. Nearly as efficient as it gets.

Fantasy Jocks

Board Size: 3 x 5.

Board Material: 80-lb stock paper. The material feels sturdy and supple.

Player Labels: 1” x 4” Full sized label.

Overall these labels were put together well. They were well color-coordinated as they were easily distinguishable from the other positions, and the names were sufficiently populated for relevant fantasy football players. Our only argument would be the pink color they used to identify kickers (perhaps aptly so). The pink began to blend with the orange and red a bit, and not to mention with the white font. But this was a minor distraction.

The biggest drawback was the miniscule printing of the bye-week. Just north of not printing any bye week information at all, it uses the smallest print among all of the draft kits we reviewed. Its tiny, and again – short of walking up to the board and squinting – you will not be readily aware if you are loading up players with the same bye week.

*We would note that the pen is really small – no bigger than the palm of your hand. So small that in the chaos of draft night, this thing is easily losable. That said, a tiny pen is better than no pen.

Summary:

Ouch. While this product probably best justifies the high price, we think that ultimately the question you have to ask yourself is this: is the double-sided tape, pen and koozie worth paying upwards of a 60% premium more for this kit? One that falls short with a less than maximum-sized board? We think not. We’d rather give that money to the winner of the league. That said, if you’ve got money to burn on a premium price, this is the one for you.

UPI Marketing

Board Size: 3’8” x 5’8”

Board Material:Despite is smaller size relative to what is out there, the board material itself is very supple and strong – with no unnecessary stickiness on the back. The board material is by far this kit’s best feature.

Player Labels
Right off the bat, one aspect about these labels is that they require being laid out with something heavy put on them, to get them to flatten out. Otherwise, they remain curled up and are a nightmare to handle.
They are 1.2” x 3.55” labels, again smaller than what’s out there, but they do a good job of populating a full breadth of names of fantasy football relevant players.

The every-critical bye week is written so small, it may as well not be put on there if it is to be read from any sort of distance. They even indicate on a one-page instruction sheet to “Keep and eye on bye weeks”. But it is impossible to keep an eye on, unless you were 2 feet from the board.

Summary
The single most expensive draft board and player label kit on the market. While this kit gets high marks for the board material and label population of names, you are getting a less than full sized board and labels, with no marker for write-ins, and a sub-par illustration of the bye weeks – and paying the most premium price there is. As the officially NFL-licensed fantasy football draft board kit, we feel like the premium paid is for their licensing fee, versus the kit itself.

4' x 6'

$34.87

Joyousa

Board Size: 4” x 6”. Full Sized

Board Material:The board material feels strong (80 lb paper stock) and its ample size probably is this fantasy football draft board kit’s biggest attribute. One note, the back side of this kit is a bit “sticky” and it was hard to unfold, without tearing it in the process.

Player Labels: While these labels do a good job of filling out all relevant fantasy football player names and include the important bye week (and NFL team), they come up short in several aspects:

(1) The Bye Week number is printed too small. It is so small, you might not even notice its there. Its relative microscopically small font make it impossible to read from any more than 2-3 feet from the board.

(2) For as impressively big as the board itself is, the size of the labels 1 x 3.5”. We did not think a half inch shorter than is available on the market in width would make much difference, but it did. What is the point of the large board, if the labels cannot take advantage of it? This is perhaps the biggest knock on this product.

(3) The choice of a dark color backgrounds with white letters made the color backgrounds difficult to distinguish. The purple blends too closely with the blue, and the orange begins to blend to closely with the red.

Price: $34.87 Whoa. While this is not the most expensive fantasy football draft board kit out there, this is a premium price.

Summary:  While this kit gets high marks for the construction and overall size of the board itself, the small and difficult to distinguish labels, and no marker for write ins makes it difficult for us to rank it any higher. For this kind of price, sufficient label size and a marker pen would be expected.

My Draft Day

Board Size:: 3’ x 5’

Board Material: The draft board material feels light and cheap. No different than a standard piece of printer paper.

Player Labels:
Though they seemed to be populated well enough throughout the kit, there are no bye weeks printed on the labels, and the font might be the smallest of the bunch. QB’s are printed on white labels and though effective in being a distinguishing ‘color’, comes off feeling a bit cheap. Most importantly there are also no NFL team names associated with the labels. You ever try to distinguish one Jones from the another late in your draft when you are trying to cover your handcuffs with no bye weeks or team association? It is obviously important in fantasy football to make sure that your starters and backups do not have the same bye week since one of the primary reasons for drafting backup players is to have coverage during the bye week of your starter. With no clear bye week information on the labels, you are unable to easily identify the pitfalls.

Price: $22.99 Perhaps this fantasy football draft board and player label kits biggest attribute: it’s as cheap as is gets.

While this kit gets top honors in terms of its price, the overall quality of the kit is low. Flimsy paper weight, undersized board, no bye weeks on the labels, no marker. You get what you pay for.

Commish Kit

Board Size: 3’ x 4’ 8”

Board Material:The board is less than full sized, the material feels notebook paper thin and cheap. We do not know any other way to say it.

Player Labels: 1” x 4”

This is a full-sized label, and we like their blend of color coordination. Perhaps the most distinguishable-from-other-positions that we have seen. You will have no problem distinguishing how WR-heavy or light your team is with a mere glance at the board. And this is key.

Bye-week. Uh oh. With what is among the largest labels on the market – and all that room on the label - and (mind-bogglingly) they do not so much as put a bye week on the label – big or small. Should you be using this kit for a 2-qb league or an auction, you very well may not have realized you had drafted Ben Rothlesburger and Russell Wilson – both with bye week 7 last year – until the next morning. Ouch.

That said, the label kit does an efficient job of populating the names. We had very few write-ins*

Summary: Not bad. For the purposes of effectively making a fantasy football draft go smoothly, overall this kit does a pretty good job. You’ve got good color coordination, large, well-populated labels, a marker for write-ins, and even a little bonus with adhesive tape squares to help mount your board. That said, it is difficult to overlook the flimsy/undersized board material, and the absence of the bye week on the labels. For $29.99, you could do a lot worse.

Fantasy Draft Gurus

$25.95

Fantasy Draft Gurus

Fantasy Draft Gurus

Board Size: 3 x 5. Though not as full-sized as what is out there, its as close as it gets.

Board Material:The material is adequate. It does not feel paper-thin, but it also does not feel as sturdy as some of the other boards out there.

Player Labels: 1” x 4”. Full sized label.

Right off the bat: We were missing TE labels. Though we assume that this was not the case in every kit they sold, it is a killer. If there was a website to go to or a phone number to call, this could easily and quickly be fixed. But we found no direct outlet for customer service. They have no website.

The labels themselves were well coordinated in terms of colors. Easily distinguishable. And they do a relatively good job of illustrating the bye week, as it is bigger all but one draft kit that we reviewed.

The font was a bit odd as it seems to ‘shade’ the letters, versus having a deep black (or a clean white) and the names of the players seem a bit cramped. Combing this lighter shading of font and crammed spacing, it made it a bit difficult to read from a distance. They just seem to have devoted so much label space to printing that Tom Brady is a “QB NE”, that they have sacrificed other critical elements of the label. What is more important: Being aware that Tom Brady is a Quarterback for the New England Patriots? Or what bye week he has?

They also include a sheet of “Smack Talk Labels” which include stickers that say “Team is Loaded Like Nachos” and “Just Give Me The Money Now, Team” Fun, but useless in our eyes.

Summary: Considering that you are getting a decently sized 3 x 5’ board with adequate material, with well color coordinated labels, it is hard to argue with the price. The labels themselves, although full sized and at least some attention to the detail of the bye week, fall short because of their choice of font and dedication of label space to low priority information. With no website or direct customer service outlet, and quickly resolving the missing TE page sets up to be a chore that no one wants.

3' x 5'

$39.87

Fantasy Bros

Board Size: 3' x 5'

Board Material: It is a nylon tarp. In all its nylon glory, it is also a relatively small tarp for its purpose. Beyond that it is dyed with several colors that almost begin to blend in with the labels themselves. While the concept seems good as it is certainly more durable than paper stock, and technically ‘reusable’, who is really going to re-use this thing? Is there actually someone out there that is going to store this nylon tarp for a year, then peel the previous year’s stickers off to make way for the current year’s labels? Maybe so. But not us.

Player Labels:This is nothing short of a mess. The labels are not color-coded! Its like you need some sort of secret decoder pen to interpret how they have arranged these fantasy football labels. They appear to be alphabetized vertically, which is easy enough to get over, but boy – the myriad of colors that are totally unrelated to position is enough to give you a headache. They actually print the word “DEFENSE” for the team defenses, with the name of the NFL team written as a tiny sidenote on the label.

They do manage to get the bye weeks printed on the label, albeit too small and they are sufficiently sized.

Price: $39.87 The 3rd most expensive fantasy football draft board and player label kit that we reviewed, and it simply misses the mark for its purpose. In fact, its makes draft night all the more confusing.

Summary: A draft board this expensive that does not serve its basic purpose adequately. Though it does get some things right – namely the listing of the bye week and adequate label size – paying a premium for a piece of dyed nylon with a confusing set of labels that are not coordinated by positional color, this one gets low marks overall. You do not get what you pay for.
